Body Language for the Prospect's Territory: 5 Tips to Demonstrate Professionalism and RespectAppropriate body language changes on a situation by situation basis. For instance, your body language will be different when you are meeting a client on their turf, rather than yours. When the client is visiting you, your body language should be confident, professional, and show that you are in control. When you are visiting a client on their territory, however, you may need to adjust your nonverbal cues. Tip One: Show your respect. If you arrive to your meeting early and choose to sit down in the waiting area, make certain that you stand up immediately when the prospect enters the room. Remaining seated will demonstrate a lack of respect. Stand up before you shake their hand so that you are at their eye level. Remember that you will appear more attractive when standing to your customer's right side. Tip Two: Allow the client to set the tone for personal space. You are on the client's territory, so make sure to give them your space. Initially, you will want to maintain a social distance of 4 to 12 feet. The social zone allows you to stand close enough to speak without shouting, yet still maintain a distance that does not feel as if you are invading their private space. If the prospect moves closer, you may follow their cue and finally settle at a distance of 3 to 4 feet. Realize that two people shaking hands while standing, generally stand at a distance of approximately 3 feet apart. Tip Three: Mirror the prospect's posture. If the prospect is standing up straight and tall, you should be too. Don't slump or slouch, especially when sitting. Nothing good ever comes from those who slump or slouch. The impression which is conveyed to the other person is one of tiredness, general lack of interest and unreliability. Tip Four: Respect the client's desk. Do not touch or lean on the prospect's desk, unless you are invited to do so. The same goes for papers, briefcases, and handbags. Do not reach onto their desk to retrieve a pen or paper unless given permission. If possible, choose to position yourself in the seat which is closest to that of personal pictures on the customer's desk. You will appear to be more likeable as you are associated with family. Tip Five: Use body language, gestures, and gestures that demonstrate your interest. Use positive nonverbal cues to show your attentiveness to the conversation. Mirroring the client's body language, nodding in agreement, and tilting your head to show you are listening are excellent ways to appear involved in the discussion. Pay attention to your eye brow flash and upward thrust of the chin to demonstrate true interest. A downward nod without any interest with the eyes will come across less sincere and a gesture without emotion. Happy Selling, |
